Mow during the cooler part of the day in order to get a clean cut. Grass blades cut better when they aren't overly stressed out by heat. That being said, dew complicates early morning mowing, especially if you are mulching, so late morning or evening mowing is usually the best. Wet grass will also aid in the spread of disease pathogens.

Watering Your Winter Lawn
Once you plant the rye seed, be sure to water it several times a day--applying sufficient water to soak the top of the soil--for a week or so until you see rye sprouts emerging. Then cut back on water (depending on your temperatures) to between every three days to a week. Mow the rye grass between an inch and 2 ¼ inches (for annual rye) or between ¾ and 2¼ inches (for perennial rye).

Remember that your winter lawn needs feeding, too. Read winter fertilizer packages with care. You can probably apply a 21-7-14 blend every three weeks or longer. Be sure to water it in.
